I’ve decided I have a love/hate relationship with running…
it’s like this new balance commercial
I love running during the spring, summer and early fall.
I hate running in the cold bitter winter, it’s hard to look forward to it when most of your mileage will be spent on the dreadmill.
I have a half marathon in 8 days…i’m somewhat prepared, but i’m not expecting to break a PR from last year’s race. I’m looking to finish with no sight of the white van picking up the runners who won’t finish in 3:30hrs.
but I digress, the point of this post is to highlight how I get through my runs on the treadmill without falling off from complete boredom.
First, a playlist is essential.
For example here’s todays list.
I think the key to an entertaining mix is the pace of the music, for me it’s gotta be upbeat but also have this thumping in the background that almost follows the beat of your heart (i.e. Mumford and Sons, The Cave & The Social Network Soundtrack – In the Hall of the Mountain King.)
Then there is also the pure fun of the music (i.e. high school musical, hairspray and the newsies), i get so excited when I hear these songs, I come super close to throwing up my hands and dancing on the treadmil, but then I remember i’m not the only one at the gym. side bar: although I go to Planet Fitness aka Judgement Free Zone, I know people judge…I mean I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t.
Another key to having a good time on the treadmil is making sure there is good tv on with Closed Captioning on. I find it’s a great way to make sure there is something to distract you whether it’s your tunes or the tv or both at the same time.
Another good idea (which I have yet to try) is loading up a movie or show on your iPad or another type of Media Tablet and taking it to the gym and watching that…I mean I could entertain myself for hours with episodes of Parenthood, the West Wing and any good movie. If you do try it, let me know how it goes!
How do you entertain yourself on the dreadmill treadmill?
